I am aiming toward having this play and soundtrack finished by the middle of February if possible, by the end at least.

While it's true I do have some plays on the site that can be used for Easter, such as "Jerusalem's Most Wanted," and several others, I have never written one specifically focusing on the events of the cross. There are many plays out there that recount the events of Good Friday and Easter in very accurate ways, and many churches do the traditional re-enactments. What could I do that would add to that? I wanted to do one that was like some of my others, in our unique "Play/Act" format, which has all the narration, music and sound effects on the soundtrack CD, meaning that there were no lines to learn. These kind on our site are very popular for Christmas... but writing one for Easter was problematic. The Nativity is much easier to depict than the crucifixion. Many smaller churches have less people and room on stage than is needed for a large-scale production of the events of the cross, which can be difficult to pull off.

This means that if I did do a narrated CD for the events, that many smaller churches would not be able to do it. If they could do it, chances are they have already done so or are planning on it, and another script would not be needed. I struggled with a way to do a meaningful and moving play based on Easter events that could be done by smaller churches as well, with the CD making it easier to learn. After much thought and prayer, I believe I have come up with a workable yet dramatic idea that revolves around the action surrounding the Lord's suffering and triumph, that allows for a narrated soundtrack, and a smaller cast and stage. This is done by having the audience see only the reactions of the main character, as he witnesses several parts of the Biblical events. We, as the audience, only hear the sounds of the scourging and crucifixion, as the young man sees it happening in front of him, looking toward the audience.

The scenes he sees are brought to life by the narration, music and effects, and we see the impact it has on him and the Biblical characters with him as they watch, the action they see "offstage" in the direction of the audience watching them. Make sense? What they are seeing is happening in the direction of the audience, so the audience sees up close the character's reactions to it. The soundtrack will make it sound real, and it will be brought to life in their imaginations. The story is more about the impact the events have on the young man, than an actual re-enactment on stage. This is similar to the way older movies used to portray the Lord; we never saw His face, only the people around Him listening and reacting to Him.

Here is the plot, in general since the details are still being worked out as I write: A young man is returning home to visit his recently-widowed mother. We see her preparing his old room for his stay, and as she does, she prays for him to be saved. He knows all about the Lord's death and resurrection, but she asks the Lord to make it real to him and to let him feel the Lord's love for him in a personal way. The son comes into the room, and she talks to him about it, but he is too tired after the trip to think much about it. She gives him a CD that dramatizes the story, and asks him to promise to listen to it. He promises, and after she leaves he puts it on as he relaxes before dinner.

As he listens to the narrator begin to tell the story, he falls asleep. However, he begins to dream and becomes a part of the action. He seems to be awake, and sees people from the story, and becomes a part of it. He sees the betrayal by Judas, Peter's denial, then watches the Lord's scourging and carrying of the cross from his vantage point with Mary and John. They see Him crucified, and hear his words from the cross before dying. (The events are compressed in time as the narrative covers the hours on the cross.)

After witnessing the extent that the Lord went to in order to pay for his salvation, the main character wakes and wishes to recieve Jesus as his own saviour. His mother confirms the events that he saw depicted in his dreams from the scriptures, and explains the salvation plan, and leads him in the sinner's prayer.

More happens than this, of course, since this is only a synopsis, and the soundtrack will have much movie-quality dramatic music, and very realistic sound effects. The play will be relatively short, also... I am shooting for a half-hour or under. So any church could do it! If you are familiar with my "Play/Act" script format and the effectiveness of the accompanying soundtracks, you will know it can be powerful and very moving. If you are interested in performing this play, come back by the middle of February at least to check on the progress, and script samples from this as-yet un-named drama. The script will be posted when ready and the CD for sale when it is ready shortly after.

Oh, by the way, the present-day part of the play itself will not refer to any particular time-period that it takes place during. Although the scenes in the dream are from the events of the crucifixion, the play can be done any time, and would work equally well as a Mother's Day drama, since the mother's prayers are primarily responsible for the conviction the son experiences, and the joy that the mother expresses over his salvation is true to life. It will also speak to sons and daughters of praying mothers. So, it could work equally well for Easter, Mother's Day or any time!

1-minute Skit Bit: "Faults Prophecy"

"Faults Prophecy"

copyight 2002 by Fred Passmore

(Adapted from our national one-minute radio program, "You Gotta Laugh!")

Listen to a Windows Media file of this program for inspiration!

(Play the Skit Bits music open as the players come onto the stage and take their positions.)

(If you are using the Supplemental Skit Trax CD, begin Track #34, the standard skitbit open music. Mike assures Jeff that he has complete faith in God, and that he trusts Him to use Mike to do His will. Romans 8:28 says, “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.” Does that mean that if we follow God, only good things will happen to us on earth? Absolutely not. But our time on earth is NOTHING compared to our time in Heaven. We are here to glorify the Lord and do His will, and our reward is eternal life with Him in Heaven. 1 Corinthians 10:31 says, “So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.” Fulfilling God’s plan for us is the greatest thing we can do, and whatever sufferings we may endure should have no effect on our faith in Him. 1 Peter 4:16 says, “However, if you suffer as a Christian, do not be ashamed, but praise God that you bear that name.” God has chosen us to serve Him, what higher honor can there be? Doing God’s will is our ultimate goal. Paul wrote to the church of Philippi about remaining in his faith through sufferings. Philippians 1:18-21 says, “(18) But what does it matter? The important thing is that in every way, whether from false motives or true, Christ is preached. And because of this I rejoice. Yes, and I will continue to rejoice, (19) for I know that through your prayers and God’s provision of the Spirit of Jesus Christ what has happened to me will turn out for my deliverance. (20) I eagerly expect and hope that I will in no way be ashamed, but will have sufficient courage so that now as always Christ will be exalted in my body, whether by life or by death. (21) For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain.”

God chose to save Mike from the tragedy of the twin towers, because he had a different purpose for him. Many lives were lost in the collapse of the buildings, but just like Mike had faith in God’s sovereignty in the face of trial, we too can trust that God has a reason for even tragedies like this. This video shows the importance of having faith in God. Everything He does has a purpose, whether it may seem like it or not. My mother once used the analogy that we are driving in a car and God is in a helicopter. We only see what is right in front of us, but God sees the entire road. So whenever you encounter hard times, maintain your faith in the Lord and know that all things have a purpose.

UPDATE: Stephen has sent me some details on the making of the movie, below:

Behind the Scenes of “A Day to Remember”

I’ve had a love for filmmaking ever since I was seven years old. I have made several videos in the past, but this was my first dramatic video, and I learned a lot while filming it. I asked a couple of my friends to come film the video at my old school. When one of them was unable to show up, we were forced to reschedule. We decided to film at my friend’s church. Unfortunately, I had no idea what I was doing. I asked my other friend to film it all the way through several times, and I planned to just fit everything together with all the different angles. The problem was, we never did anything the same way. In one take, I was saying a line while taking my jacket off, and in the other, I was saying my line was adjusting my tie. Everything was all mixed up and it looked terrible. As much as it pained me to say it, we needed to do it again. We weren’t able to use the church again, because it was being used. So we went back to my old school, and used a room upstairs. Everything was working perfectly, the scenes were looking good and we had just two scenes left. All of the sudden, my camera cut off. It wouldn’t turn on, even with new batteries. So we had to reschedule yet again. Being in college and all of my friends having different schedules, this was no easy task. But I was determined that this would be the last day of filming. I drew out every scene and how I wanted it to be shot, I got a new camera, we had the room ready, everything seemed to be going as planned. However, when it comes to my videos, I am a bit of a perfectionist, especially with this one. I realized I would never be happy with how the video looked unless I could get behind the camera myself. So I decided to cast someone else to play my part, and we rescheduled once again.
It was hard not to be discouraged after so many failed attempts. I had never had so much trouble with a video before, but I trusted that God had a purpose for what was going on, just like the video says! I got in touch with Anthony Dimaria, who is just as passionate about acting as I am with filmmaking. He has been in many videos, including ones that have won contests! So finally, on December 13, we set out to film once more. It took a few hours, but we finally completed it! Anthony’s mom even made barbecue for our lunch break! I immediately made my way home and finished editing that night. Taylor Clyde, who played Mike, wrote the music for the credits and the video was finally finished. I was so eager to upload the video that I was a tad late for work (probably not the best decision). I have learned a lot while making the video, especially that I need to use microphones next time! But I’m pleased with how it turned out and I hope everyone enjoys it! Hopefully it is a good reminder of the sovereignty of God and His love for us all!

Thanks again to Mr. Passmore for providing outstanding scripts for young filmmakers like me!

-Stephen Ridley

Others have sent me video of their performance of this script. Here is one from a past entry.

"The Soul Hunt" film

Steven Knight made this film, adapted from my skit script "Assignment: Witness!" for his church hunting fellowship. All of the "actors" are active members of our Brotherhood
ministry, and includes Sunday School teachers, as well as Sunday School
Director, Brotherhood Director, and Chairman of Deacons.

We know for sure of one teenage girl who was saved after the movie
premier, and we have heard several other reports of people who have been
touched by the message. Read the Christmas drama "Assignment: Comfort And Joy!" now, and print it out for free.

This is the third Christmas play done in our unique "Play/Act" format, which means there are no lines to learn. The soundtrack supplies all the narration, music and sound effects. Besides all the movie-quality background music and effects, the CD features two songs by two-time Grammy Award nominee singer-songwriter Archie Jordan. The composer of such famous songs as "What A Difference You've Made In My Life" and "It Was Almost Like A Song," Archie is the recipient of seven gold and three platinum albums, as well as fifteen ASCAP awards. I am blessed and thankful to be able to use his music on this soundtrack, the songs "He's The Hand On My Shoulder," and "Someone."

To save time in the review process, you could read just the Story Outline to see if you like it enough to read the entire script.

Here is an audio preview of the soundtrack, the entire Prolog scene. The soundtrack, which supplies all the narration, music and sound effects, can be ordered on the script page.

Here is the script for the embedded skit (done in three parts during the play's framework script) called "The Ultimate Gift." It is intended to be done as part of the overall play, but it could be done by itself if you need something shorter. I imagine the judges at these events must be getting very familiar with my stuff! Here is another great email from a young lady testifying to this kind if thing...

Fred,

My name is Rebekah Dunbar and I am 17 years old, and live in Arkansas. I attend First Freewill Baptist Church and every year my drama team competes in a National Youth Conference that our denomination puts on.

Two years ago I came across your site when looking for a drama for us to compete with, and found so many skits that related to that year's theme and made it easy to work with and memorize for performing. That summer we used the Bubble Wrap skit which was a huge hit, we won district and made it all the way to Nationals where we competed and won! Following the performance we had multiple churches ask where we came up with the idea and if we could come and perform it for their home church. Of course we directed them all to your website where we ended up competing against some of the churches that we gave your reference to that summer.

This past year, we used "The Crate Escape." We did edit multiple parts to fit the conference theme and time regulations but in the end, we won Nationals for the second year! Again, we had multiple people come and ask us where we came up with the great skit idea and if we would perform it for their chuch. We were even asked to visit some church camps where we had the opportunity to perform and work with students our own age, that we talked to and had the chance to share our testimonies and tell them about our personal walk with Christ.

I don't want to take up too much of your time but I wanted to thank you for doing what you do. I think all of the skits on the site are interesting and modernized which is sometimes hard to find for a church competition. This upcoming year we will most likely be using another one of your scripts to compete with. Our drama team could not have performed as well without the basis of the skits put on your site. Again, thank you and I pray that God blesses you and your site.

In Christ, Rebekah Dunbar

Here are links to the skits she referred to: "The Wrap Group" and "The Crate Escape."

Here is another recent email along these lines:

Dear Fred,

The Grace Baptist Christian School will be using your script "The Sheep"s Clothing Store" on March 30th in a Student Convention competition.

We are a small Christian school in South Ga. and compete in Student Convention with Schools from North Georgia, Florida and Alabama. Our students have been performing your skits for the past 6 years. In performing these skits they placed 1st in everyone of them! We appreciate the gospel that is provided in these skits. We appreciate all that has been written.

-Wanda Vice
Tifton, GA

I found this bit of conversation below on a message board at this home school debate site: http://homeschooldebate.com/ The particular page with the following post no longer exists, but here is part of the message I saw about scripts they have used in competitions from ChristianSkitScripts.com. Interesting stuff! I don't know what all the abbreviations are for, except "HI" stands for "Humorous Interpretation."

...an author that I've heard four/five pieces from that are really incredibly cute is Fred Passmore. He wrote the winning duo piece (Carillo/Carillo), the winning and third place OI piece (Gabby Elliot and Sam Nasser), and the second-place HI piece (Marshall Sherman) at the Regional tournament this last weekend.

If you can find one of his pieces that isn't being done... then it's a great idea... make sure you follow the directions before taking the script though. The pieces that are taken are: "The Great Church Robbery," "Battle of the Sexes: Round One," "The Man with the Shellfish Heart," "Mama's Close Call," "Testimony Show." Every one of the above pieces has placed at one or more tourneys. "The Battle of the Sexes: Round One," is done by Carrillo/Carrillo, and they have gotten first place at every Texas tourney this year, except for the ASAP, (Weatherford) practice tourney in November of last year. And that was because they didn't have the duo's at that tournemant.

"Testimony Show," which is done by Carrillo/Elliott, has placed third in Houston for the practice tourney, and third in Dallas, at the Pre-Regional Q. "Mama's Close Call," done by Michelle Carrillo of Carrillo/Elliott, has been the first place HI ever since it came on the scene, in Corpus Christi, and again here in Dallas at the Pre-Q. My piece, "The Man with the Shellfish Heart," has placed second in Houston for the practice tourney, and again here in Dallas it placed second. And "the Great Church Robbery," done by Samantha Nasser (my debate partner) has only been on the scene for the Dallas Pre-Regional Q, and placed fourth in OI.

So Fred Passmore's stuff is good. He has winning pieces in almost every IE, except DI. Since then, I have been contacted by many that have done that script and all the other Christmas dramas on the site, wanting to know when I would have a new one. Well, I'm writing one for this year, which I am hoping will be ready, along with the complete soundtrack containing all the narration, music and sound effects, by the beginning of September. Please pray for me as I write, that it will be powerful, and touch people's hearts for the Lord. It's titled: ""Assignment: Comfort and Joy!" UPDATE: Well, it's taken longer that I anticipated, but the script is done, and HERE IT IS.

The plot: a lonely radio DJ is working the night shift on Christmas Eve. As he plays music and reads a Christmas story he has written, we see three different listeners who tune in during the midst of their difficulties. Each one of the three story parts affect their lives in unique ways, and lead toward a surprising conclusion. The whole play will be under an hour, and the embedded stories can be done separately for those wanting a shorter presentation. It's a play and several skits in one!

You can get a special preview of the opening scene below. Remember, this is from the first draft, so things are subject to change and editing, but I thought you might like to get a very early taste of how it all begins. Come back soon, or visit the official site, to keep up with the progress! -Fred

Voice of the narrator, Afriel: Well, here we are again... all gathered together to celebrate the coming of the Lord into this old world. One thing most everyone enjoys this time of year is hearing a good Christmas story... and boy, have I got one for you. This story, like many of our favorites, takes place on Christmas Eve. Allow me set the scene... Here, on the outskirts of a small country town, is a century-old church building, its stained glass windows brightly lit from within as worshippers gather. The strain of a Christmas hymn echoes sweetly among the majestic cedars and weathered stones of the small cemetery just behind it.

(Actions during the next paragraph.) Steven Carter enters from the back of the church and walks slowly up the aisle toward the front. He is carrying a Christmas wreath and a thermos bottle. He is dressed in a long coat. when he reaches the front, where the marker stone is located, he looks down for a moment, then places the wreath beside it. He kneels down and begins to speak with a bowed head.

Narrator Afriel: Allow me to introduce you to Steven Carter, a man who is struggling to find the usual happiness of the season, which eluded his heart for the first time last Christmas, and seems even farther away this year. The decorated wreath that he carries is not to adorn a door to a home, but the marker of his departed loved one... his wife, Emily Carter. Greeting his wife, he told her how much he missed her, and wished he could see her again. His job at the radio station had seemed to lose some of its appeal since he no longer knew she was listening to him at home. He expressed his doubts as to whether he was doing any good there, and if anyone was even listening.

(Actions during the next paragraph.) Steven puts a hand on his brow as he grieves. But then, slowly walking onto the scene, we see the Presence of the Lord coming to him, and drawing beside him, lays a hand on his shoulder. He stays this way for several long moments, and comforts Steven. (We hear part of the song "He's The Hand On My Shoulder" by Archie Jordan during this part.)

Narrator Afriel: Feeling more alone than he has ever felt, Steven is without even words to pray. But the Spirit of God knows what is in his heart, and his deepest needs are expressed by Him to the Father, in earnest groanings that are understood only by His sympathetic ear. He begins to understand that he is not left alone, for in his children's darkest hour, The Lord Jesus is there, as He promised He would be, and holds back the waves as they pass through the storm. (The song's words are heard here.) As his spirit becomes aware of the comforting presence of the Lord, Steven begins to come back from the brink of despair, and finds some words to pray. He tells the Lord that, although he knows his wife can't hear him now, he would like to make a special request that Jesus relay his message of love to his wife in Heaven.

(Actions during the next paragraph.) Steven stands, straighter than he was before. He looks toward the church, then raises his collar and begins to walk offstage, down through the audience toward the back... or off to one side and out of view if that stage is raised and only accessable from the side. The Lord walks with him, beside him, to the end of the stage, then stops and watches him go. When Steven is out of sight, the Lord turns to the side and beckons to someone as yet unseen. The angel, Afriel, comes onstage and walks to him with a rapid pace. When he reaches the Lord, he kneels with bowed head, and the Lord touches his shoulder, bidding him rise. The Lord grasps his shoulders as they smile at each other with a real affection, and then they begin to walk and talk, strolling from one side of the stage to the other at a leisurely pace as friends would do. Before they part, the Lord places a hand on the angel's shoulder in a solemn blessing, as Afriel bows his head for a moment. The angel seems to grow stronger and infused with power, standing taller and lifting his fists at his side with a smile.

Narrator Afriel: As Steven left, his burden lifted some, he still carried with him the weight of loneliness that only another person can help shoulder. And as he departed the darkening churchyard for his work at the local radio station, I moved out of the stand of fragrant green cedars where I had been watching. You see, I know all this about Steven because he is my responsibility. My name is Afriel, an angel in the army of God. Jesus, as the Commander-In-Chief of the Angelic Host, sends us to Earth to watch over his children, and Steven is who I am currently assigned to, from his second birth as a teen-ager. I'm not high up in the angelic hiearchy; I'm not a warrior angel, just a messenger and minister. But my joy is no less than that of Gabriel or Michael when it comes to serving the King of Kings. Bidding me rise, and expressing the warmth that is a trademark of His personality, He began to tell me of his next assignment for me. This one, as He explained it to me, was very special, in that it concerned a number of people around Steven that were to be a part of it. It involved reaching out to them all with encouragement, the call to salvation, protection, provision, all the things we angels excel at ministering in. With a touch of His holy hand, he imparted to me a special anointing to accomplish my task... and I felt strength and power to carry out His will fill my heart and frame.

(Actions during the next paragraph.) The Lord gives the angel leave to go, and he does, bowing as he leaves. The Lord walks away, offstage, to the side, while the angel comes down to the front and goes through the main aisle toward the back. Thrilled with his assignment, the angel does some happy dance steps as he goes, a broad smile on his face.

Narrator Afriel: Everything begins with Jesus. He is the Alpha and Omega, the Beginning and the End, and this new adventure was no different. This was going to be an excellent and unforgettable Christmas Eve; for Steven, for me, and everyone he came into contact with tonight. (End of the first act.)
(Copyright 2011 Sheep Laughs Publications)

The script is now posted, read it here!

Skit Spotlight: "The Audition"

Every so often I'll be highlighting a particular skit from my site ChristianSkitScripts.com, when I feel like it's the right time. Today we are looking at the skit titled "The Audition." Wanting to cross over into secular entertainment, a Christian actor tries out for the role of an action hero in a major motion picture. Torn between his standards and the desire to get the role, the aspiring "new Eastwood" finds that being a crossover artist puts him on the wrong side of the fence. Lasting about 10 minutes, and using three people (with one offstage on a mic), this skit is easy to do, and is a powerful witness about the price of compromise.

After being put through his paces in several types of situations to see how the actor can handle them, each one comically depicting typical Hollywood tropes, the hopeful actor stumbles when he is required to read profanity from the script in one dramatic scene. He protests, and draws the ire of the producer conducting the audition. Here is an excerpt from that scene:

Jake: To be honest, Mr. O'Neal, I'm... uncomfortable with some of the language in it. I thought that I could just substitute something less offensive and still get the meaning across.

Producer: The swearing has to stay, to make the scene work. Your character isn't a Boy Scout, he's a seasoned field agent. Now read it again, with the lines done right.

Jake: (Reluctantly, he starts again.) "Hold it right there, Brock. What's this... what's this..."
(He stops and lowers the script.)

Producer: What's the problem, Jake?

Jake: I'm sorry, I just can't do the lines with all the cursing in it. I don't use that kind of language in my life, and I can't bring myself to do it on camera with everyone watching. If I play a hero, the kids watching will imitate me, and I don't want to be responsible for that.

(Irwin has lowered his script in amazement as he hears this.)

Producer: (After a moment's silence.) You're... you're kidding me, right? (Laughs.) Yeah, you're kidding, showing me you can do comedy! (Chuckles.) That's funny stuff. But this scene isn't supposed to be funny. Now let's try again. Really let loose on him and show him you mean business!

Jake: I do mean business, Mr. O'Neal. I'd prefer not to do it with the swearing and blasphemy.

Producer: (Unbelieving.) This guy sounds serious. Is he serious, Irwin?

Irwin: (Turning toward the light.) I think he is, Mr. O'Neal.

Producer: I don't believe this. What are you, a Ward Cleaver or something? This audition ain't for a Superman movie, it's for Lone Wolf. He's tough, a man's man.

Jake: I have no objections against playing a tough man. One of the toughest men ever portrayed in the movies was done without saying a single dirty word. Remember Jesus in his recent record-breaking movie?

Producer: Jesus? (It dawns on him.) You're a Christian.

Jake: Yes, sir, I am.

Producer: (Under his breath.) Mohammad on a Moped! Why don't they screen these people better than this? (To Jake.) Look, kid, you got the look for a leading man in Hollywood. You carry yourself well and you could go far with the right contacts. But all the contacts in the world won't help, if you won't take a role just because you have some personal moral objection to it. You might as well forget about making it in this town with that attitude.

Jake: So you're telling me there are no movie producers with morality? You have personal morals, don't you?
(Irwin makes a sarcastic "p-h-h-t-t-t" sound through his lips as if amused.)

Producer: (Sharply.) Yes, Mr. Do-Right, I have morals, they just happen to be different from yours.

Irwin: (Snickers under his breath.) You can say that again.

Producer: (Darkly.) I heard that, Irwin.

Jake: Besides, Mr. O'Neal, it's not just the language. I was having trouble with the violence and sexual promiscuity the hero, so-called, endorses by his lifestyle. I can't go against my convictions.

Producer: Mr. Sheldon, thanks for...

Jake: Shelby.

Producer: Yeah, whatever. Thanks for coming to the audition. We'll look at your tape, and if the director thinks you have potential, you'll get a call-back. But personally, I wouldn't lose any sleep waiting for one. Thank you. Good day. Irwin, bring on the next one.

Jake: Now just a second. Let me get this straight... you're dismissing me just because I'm not a foul-mouthed, unprincipled heathen like most of the other actors around here? What about talent? Doesn't it count for anything any more?

(End of the excerpt.) By the end of the skit, Jake realizes his calling lies in a different direction, but one that can still use his talents. As he leaves, confident in his decision, the stage hand follows after him, wanting to know more about a life that can be led with integrity and such joy. The producer, left alone, goes into a fit which triggers a heart palpitation. The skit ends with him calling for help, but there is no-one around to hear him.

There is a soundtrack CD to go with it to supply the many sound effects needed, and will make it much funnier and effective. Preview it on the script page, or just click here.

Your actors and audience will enjoy this skit, which can be done with the script in hand, as this is written into the scene, as part of the audition. So go here to read and print out the entire free script right now!

Here is one testimonial email from a person that used it:
Fred,

We performed "The Audition" on May 1st, at our Awana Awards Banquet at the Cornerstone Community Church in Auburn, CA.

Thank you so much for putting your site together and offering scripts with a powerful message. "The Audition" was incredible. I am no actor, yet even I was able to prepare and deliver the lines because most lines had cues from other actors. Very easy to perform!

Thanks again and God bless you.

-Bill Harben
Awana Commander
Cornerstone Community Church
Auburn, CA.

Soundtrack CD Previews

On my main site, ChristianSkitScripts.com, I have 15 soundtrack CDs for sale (so far) that supply the music and sound effects for the free scripts found there. While most are of the type where you do you own dialog from the script and use the music and sounds when the script prompts, some are of the narrated variety, for those skits that are done in my unique "Play/Act" format. For these, there are no lines to learn, as the dialog is related by the narrator on the CD.

Now, my regular and return customers don't need to be convinced as to the quality and effectiveness of these CDs... they know how professional and useful they are and come back for more (check out the Testimonials Page and see how often the soundtracks are praised). However, for those first-time visitors to the site that love the scripts, but would like to have a preview of the CDs before buying, I am now posting just that for their convenience!

I'm in the middle of the project, and have produced and posted audio previews of 10 so far, and I will keep on until every CD can be previewed. On the audio previews I go over each track, and let the prospective buyer hear a few seconds of each one, so they'll be able to be confident about what they are getting. Each script that has a soundtrack preview has a link in it to listen to it.

Here are the ones posted so far in Windows Media audio format; click the "preview" link on each to listen. First is "Mama's Close Call." Your congregation will enjoy these humorous skits!

Written for Mother's Day, but good any time, this skit will have everyone in stitches! Mama, settling in for a nice quiet evening with her TV, gets more excitement than she bargained for -or wanted- when her writer son drops in. Getting all choked up -literally- over his tribute to mothers, Mama wonders: will she ever get to watch her movie, or will she end up in the hospital? A hysterical 8-10 minute sketch with a heart! Click here to read it!

(Click here for a version of the script for an all-female cast, with the son part changed to a daughter.)

"Mama Knows Best!" Now available, a Mother's Day version of the skit "How To Be Spiritually Fit," featuring the same characters from the incredibly popular "Mama's Close Call!" When Mama's son Little Louie buys a "do-it-yourself" spiritual fitness program for her, things don't go as he planned. Click here to read this hysterical script!

(Also available in a FEMALE-ONLY cast version!) With a few obvious slight revisions, this could make a good Father's Day script as well!
UPDATE: Read some of the great comments below to see what people are saying about these two skits!

Another Christmas Drama reference and a Testimonial

Found this reference to my newest Christmas drama on a search site, here. Someone had posted a question about finding a Christmas drama, and someone answered with this...

"My favorite of this site is the drama ‘Redemption in the Wings’. This particular play not only has the traditional manger scene, but it also encompasses homelessness, salvation, forgiveness and reconciliation between father and daughter. I would definitely recommend this play for any church that was putting on a production for the first time because there are no speaking parts. That gives the actors a chance to get used to acting, without the added burden of learning lines." http://www.christianskitscripts.com/

Nice, I appreciate it! Add this to an earlier post with a letter from someone that did the play and had great success, and you get the idea it might be a good one for your church to do this year.

Update: here is an email I got today that reported how their church's performance of "Redemption In The Wings" went!

Fred,

Our little church very successfully performed "Redemption In The Wings" thanks to your help and God's. It took just about every regular church member but our cast was perfect, just as if you had written the play specifically for us. It became a play within a play within a play as even our cast members were ministered to and affected by the powerful message of forgiveness and redemption. The tears and the laughter were real that night.

We rented an old movie theater that had been converted into a drama theater; it couldn't have looked more like a homeless shelter even if we tried. We used the theater's sound system and stage lighting and we pulled back the curtains to reveal the wings. The place was packed and those who came expecting the same old Mary-Joseph-shepherds-nativity story were both surprised and in awe.

People are still talking about the play. In fact, they want us to perform again so that it can be recorded for the shut-ins of our church and our community. There were even wonderful comments about the professionally done sound recording on the CD we got from you.

Thanks so much for all you put into your work. Thanks also for the extra advice and being willing to help. Here's an interesting performance of my skit "The Sheep's Clothing Store," that I found on YouTube.

Here is the link to the video performance!

In the skit by the same title, "The Sheep's Clothing Store" is where items like clothing and accessories are sold to make people look like believers so they can infiltrate churches, date a believer or simply look respectable. Mr. Wolfe (the devil) is the store manager and salesman. A non-committed churchgoer is a customer that discovers that not all is as it seems in the store.

The script and soundtrack for your own performance of this skit (the part of the store's owner is for a male in the actual skit) can be found here:
http://www.christianskitscripts.com/sheepsclothing.htm

"Redemption In The Wings" performance report

I often hear praise reports back from individuals who used the scripts at their church, and they encourage me to continue on. Here is a letter written to me to let me know how their Christmas play went, and it was a blessing for me to read, so I'm sharing it with you here also.

Dear Fred,

We, at New Life Baptist Tabernacle (in Ferrum, VA), have been using your Christmas play materials since 2005 and have greatly enjoyed each production, with each year overwhelmingly topping the previous year's production. This past December we presented your new play "Redemption in the Wings" and it was a huge success. Our audience swelled with applause and many were touched at a deep level, emotionally and most importantly, spiritually.

One lady, who attended the largest church in town, came as a guest in support of one of our cast members and said she was impressed with the production, adding, "I definitely was not expecting a play like that...." (I deduced her to imply that our church is small and in a rural area, and therefore is not expected to produce such an amazing, impacting event.) I was SO proud to have been able to have a part in presenting such an outstanding, nativity production that would lift high the name of Jesus and Glorify God in our community.

Our costumes were awesome! Our set rocked! Our cast pulled off their portrayal of their characters precisely, perfectly and powerfully! It was INCREDIBLE!!! One of my favorite memories of that night was when Charlotte revealed to Nate that she was Old Johnny's daughter, I heard several deep gasps of shock from some in the audience. They were leaning forward, entranced and pulled into the story-hook-line-and sinker... they were on the edge of their seats! In addition, during the part at the end when Charlotte reveals her identity to her father and to the entire cast and audience, our audience erupted in applause- long before being "cued" by the soundtrack. The bottom line is that the people were moved deeply; lots of tears and sniffles-each revealing an emotional tenderness, vulnerability and acceptance of the message we wanted to get across.

Finally, praise the Lord- we know of at least four people who gave their hearts to Christ that night. I am confident more were awakened to their spiritual need and each were given the gospel literature and information about our ministry and our desire to help them. Everyone in attendance was incredibly blessed by what they experienced; it was an unforgettable night!
My thanks to you for creating such outstanding material; and how easy you have made it for a church of any size to pull off a professional, entertaining, and uplifting and meaningful production.

My only question to you is this: How soon can you get cracking on next years' play script? I've already been asked by some: What could we possibly do next year to top our last play? (I will leave the answer to that question in your capable hands, Fred.)

A grateful admirer of your work and ministry,
-Evelyn Walls

Here is the link to the play script she was referring to: "Redemption in the Wings." You might want to do it yourself next Christmas!

Life Imitates Skit

When I write my skits, I sometimes come up with far-out and funny ideas that make a point with hyperbole, and I don't expect that one would ever see a similar situation take place. But I recently found this article online that proved me wrong!

One of the most extreme was a skit about a person who hauls around a cardboard image of Jesus, to depict how people are attached to certain Hollywood images without really knowing the Lord in a personal relationship. You can read that script, written in 2005, here: "The Guy With The Cardboard Christ." Go ahead, read it then come back here.

Okay, now that you have, here is the article where something similar happened in 2006...

A CARDBOARD CHRIST
By Paul Proctor
December 13, 2006

Click here to read original article: NewsWithViews.com

The Des Moines Register reported in its December 10th edition, that teenagers from Lamoni United Methodist Church recently took a life-size cardboard cutout of "Jesus" and rolled it through the Jordan Creek Town Center in West Des Moines on a two-wheeled cart and into the movie theater on their way to see "The Nativity Story."

The Register's Religion Editor, Shirley Ragsdale, reported the triumphal entry this way:

"As they took turns pushing the cardboard Jesus on a two-wheeled handcart through the mall's festive decorations and Christmas music, the faces of the shoppers around them registered surprise and curiosity. Chatter at the food court quieted when the kids pushed Jesus by. Kiosk shopkeepers asked what was going on.

One older man burdened with shopping bags was so fascinated, he nearly blundered into a glittering Christmas tree.

"The cardboard Jesus is an exercise in living their faith and 'taking Jesus Christ with them everywhere,'" said the Rev. Steve McElroy.

Earlier this year, McElroy had talked to about 20 middle school and high school students in his church about the challenge in living as a Christian.

The discussion became more real when the pastor showed up with the cardboard cutout and asked the youth group if they would take Jesus with them any time they were together.

"It's one thing taking Jesus around local places. It's more difficult to be a public Christian when you're hauling him through the mall crowded with shoppers," Pastor McElroy said. "It's a good test."

"It's a chance to show people we are Christians and we're not embarrassed about it," said Agnes Ansong, 16, of Lamoni.

"We want people to know what we believe in and that we take the Christmas season seriously." McElroy said.

They want people to know they believe in what, cardboard? Well, these kids may "take the Christmas season seriously," but obviously their pastor doesn't take the Son of God or His Word too seriously.

"Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth. Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the LORD thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me;" - Exodus 20:4-5

Have our convictions gone on Christmas vacation? What part of "Thou shalt not" is so hard for today's pastor to grasp? And who says we are we to take Jesus anywhere? Did He not command us to follow Him - which begs the question: Who is in control of the relationship here?

"Then said Jesus unto his disciples, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me." - Matthew 16:24

It's yet another example of absolute truth being sidelined by a pragmatic pastor teaching his youth that the end justifies the means - that love is a license to do whatever you feel is effective, as long as it's for Jesus - even when the Lord Himself says "Thou shalt not."

Now I don't really blame the kids here because, according to the Register, their pastor is the one who told them to do it - and obviously their parents aren't anymore discerning than the pastor or they would have refused their participation - but consider what they're really being taught by this egregious exercise.

Whether the pastor knows it or not, these kids are learning a cardboard christ-likeness - how to mutely make your way through a materialistic world without uttering a single saving word of truth or bearing witness to a living Christ with a changed heart and a renewed mind. Is there a more perfect illustration of today's "evangelism" than kids pushing a lifeless prop around the mall for spectacle? How Pastor McElroy translates that into "an exercise in living their faith," Ill never know.

-End of article excerpt-

And I thought the idea was too outlandish to be real! Anyway, it's a popular script on the site, and I hope you perform it at your church... but don't act it out in real life!

Below, the drama team of Karmen and Greg act out the script.

To see the skit performed by another drama group, watch this Youtube video as they do "The Guy With the Cardboard Christ." It was performed Feb. 7, 2010 at Garden Grove Church of the Nazarene. They also turn up online quite a bit, and that's where I find some occasionally. That's what happened the other day, as I was fishing around for videos of my skits being done, I found a couple posted by a group from Fayetteville, Georgia known as the Harps Crossing Community Theatre. My favorite was their performance of "Crazy For Christ," which is about a young Christian intern applying for a position at a mental institution that has to go on the defensive against the hostile interviewer. The twist at the end is a fun turnaround. The actors delivered their lines perfectly, and I was very pleased with the production.

I asked the person that posted the video, Tim Richardson, for some information, and here's what I learned...

Hello Fred,

I'm so glad you liked Crazy for Jesus. It is one of my favorites as well. We worked hard to perfect our performance and I think the final product is brilliant. I (Tim Richardson) play the doctor/mental patient and the actress was Lauren Kosiba. The rest of the cast is Billy Pagent and Charlie Fells who play the orderlies, Dennis Lowre plays the real doctor, and Amber Hancock plays the nurse. We performed the skit at my home church, Harps Crossing Baptist Church in Fayetteville, GA. Over the last few years I put together a professional theatre company at Harps Crossing, called the Harps Crossing Community Theatre and soon it will be known as Insane Rescue Productions. We have a huge group of up and coming volunteers in our actors guild and our ministry is growing at breakneck speed.

A funny behind-the-scenes story is the hypodermic needle that the nurse uses was supposed to be empty but as a joke they filled it with cold water so when she went to inject me she sent ice cold water down my back. I almost screamed from shock but we laughed about it after the performance!

Your friend,
Tim Richardson

Below I've posted some screen captures of the video showing some of the drama that takes place... click on any of the images to see them larger.

I am looking forward to seeing if they do any more of my material in the future, and I'm pleased to provide the video links below so you can enjoy them for yourself, as well as be inspired to do the skit at your own church! Part 2

(If you haven't read Part 1 already, read the last post here first.)

Part Two: Why Christian Comedy is viewed with distrust by the Church.

It is a historical irony that although the Church has been instrumental is promoting art as a whole to glorify God, no institution has been more resistant to new expressions of art for that purpose. Whenever an artist introduces a form of art unfamiliar to the church, it is initially viewed with distrust, as if the church suspects that the message has been made subject to the medium (in a reverse of the fears of the world). Aware that the theme of glorifying God is tantamount, the sacred critic often feels that art which expresses much of the creativity and talent of the artist is in some way detracting from the message, and indeed, may be introducing undersirable elements of the world into the church.

It is the desire to separate the worldy from the sacred, without recognising that all of humanity has certain things in common, that has created this friction; a friction which has put the heat on the Christian artist striving to reach all men by all means, as did Paul (who was also criticised for it).

God Himself has used this method to communicate. Consider the events of Pentecost! The disciples had gathered at Jesus' command to await the coming of the Holy Spirit to endue them with power from on high. What was the evidence, beyond the initial visible flames of fire that descended on each of them? The ability to speak in languages other than their own native tongue. To what purpose? To edify the hearer, who would not have understood them had they been speaking the Gospel message in any other language. So God reached out to the many people from other countries, using the gift that He had given the disciples.

God has given us various gifts, and we are to use them as good stewards to reach as many as we can with the message of the Gospel. We may be using, in a manner of speaking, another language than is understood by the other believers around to do this. But that in no way invalidates the message being communicated, as long as it is understood by the hearers for which it is intended. It is understood by those who need it most; by those who are spiritually receptive and open to it. Hence Jesus words; "He that hath an ear to hear, let him hear what the Spirit saith to the churches."

Christian comedy, when rightly used as a tool, is as powerful a medium as any other to communicate what the Spirit is saying to the church. Further, it is a means not only of reaching the lost with the message in a way that is palatable to them, but also of uplifting the heart of the believers already in the church. As in preaching, the message is balanced between enlightening the lost and exhorting the saved.

Comedy as as legitimate a method of ministering as playing a musical instrument, singing a song, teaching a class, preaching a message, and so on. Emphasis on legitimate; it is not as common. It is also not as neccessary, either. A church can do without a comedian; it cannot do without a good preacher or other ministries. However, it can benefit by a Christian comedian in the same way it can benefit by a special speaker, a talented and dedicated singer or musician, or any number of other form of the ministering arts.

Consider the message of "the whole body is not the eye; if it were, where would be the hearing?" Just so, although there are parts of the body of Christ that may not be as evident or important as some others, they are still needed and beneficial. Imagine a church that promoted preaching to the total exclusion of music, singing, congregational worship or participation. Or a church that was devoted to only music and singing? Neither would be a well-rounded, effective (or well-even attended) house of worship. Look upon the Christian comedian as the funny-bone of the church! It has it's place in the body, when used wisely.

Some feel that having any humor in the church amounts to a lack of seriousness over sin and salvation. Here is an excerpt from article from a site that is a good example of this viewpoint, written by a dear person who feels, apparently, that Christian comedians are the devil's tool, designed with the idea of dragging poor lost souls to hell, laughing insensitively all the way. A quote says this: "Maybe the reason that "Christian Comedians" and many other "trifles" have slipped in on the Church, is because we have SIMPLY FORGOTTEN the utter magnitude of the very real and present tragedy of SIN -- killing people right before our very eyes...
...or maybe we just don't care..."

As an aformentioned "trifle" (thank you, sir), that page seems to me to reflect the attitude some have: "Please don't smile or laugh, it might give people the wrong impression that Christianity is anything other than a frowning, scowling, kill-joy religion. And for Heaven's sake, toss out anyone that exhibits a sense of humor. People are going to hell in here! And we want to help them."

Oops, a little pointed humor slipped through in there. Sorry, sir. I deserve to be tackled and yelled at to "Shut up! Just shut up!" according to your article. Have you ever considered anger management counseling?

But he's not alone. A fellow Christian comedian sent some emails to several churches letting them know he was available. Here is a response he got back (note the 'Dear friend' opening before the knife is applied and twisted with malice):

Dear friend:

I am quite certain that you do not intend to offend anyone by this unsolicited e-mail. However, I absolutely cannot think of anything more revolting to me personally than your request to stand in our pulpit where the solemn Word of God is preached and use comedy to give the gospel. It is unscriptural, illogical, and will never, as long as I breathe and have any say in our ministry be a part of what goes on here at (edited church name).

While you might be thinking, that’s over the top, consider what the Scriptures teach about the sober duty of the pastor to teach the “unsearchable riches of Christ.” Your presentation is the complete opposite. No, I won’t even consider having you in.

It's that kind of attitude that the average Christian comedian is up against; that of the worthlessness of this type of ministry to impart any kind of useful message. It is worth mentioning here that skits are viewed with some distrust by those who simply doubt their usefulness. They question (rightfully so) whether skits are imparting enough of the Word to be effective, and feel that they may distract from serious preaching. This may certainly be the case if the skits are only done for fun, and contain no clear message. Skits, interpretive dance, videos, etc., when used in a church service, that are interjected only to "lighten things up" and make the church more "user-friendly" are worse than ineffective, they can be downright deadly to a worshipful atmosphere and serious consideration of eternal truths and destinies.

A skit that is presented as part of a Sunday service or revival must be meaningful. This does not exclude funny skits, as long as they are both funny and meaningful. Only when written and performed with the mind to minister, (as are all of the skits on this site) and when intended to add to, affirm and confirm the preaching of a full-gospel, called-of-God minister, will they be used of God. If they are used in a setting besides Sunday church services, like special events where there is no preaching, the level of Word content is even more important, as it may be the only exposure to the Gospel that some there will have. There is NO EXCUSE for "just for fun" skits by Christians. Everything should be done to the glory of God.

Christian comedy, when expressed by a called and gifted Christian, can be a blessing to the saved and a means of reaching the lost. This is not to say that there are no "bad apples" in the area, any more than that of other ministries. This is to debate the legitimacy of the art, not the spirituality of individual artists. There are people living holy, and being used of God in Christian Comedy, just like there are such people in Southern Gospel singing groups. And there are a good amount of misguided, and just plain hypocrital performers in Christian Comedy, just like there are such people in Southern Gospel singing groups.

I know first-hand the truth of that statement, having been heavily involved in both areas for years. I know, I'm in danger of stepping on some tender, sensitive tootsies with that statement, but that's never stopped me before. The term "sacred cow" applies to any area of ministry that is thought to be more holy than others simply due to a person's love for it. News flash, folks: people are alike all over. And God uses them in spite of it. Your type of music or ministry, whatever your preference, is no more "righteous" than any other simply because you prefer it. And neither are the performers.

So, this writer hopes that if you have in the past downgraded or criticized practitioners of the Christian comedy art simply because you distrusted it, that you will --if nothing else--allow each person to answer God's call in the way he feels led without hindrance or judgement. But further, this writer hopes that you will open your heart and mind to accept the laughter and joy that can be imparted through this ministry, and not be such a sourpuss!

-Fred Passmore

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://letsskitbusy.blogspot.com/2010/01/can-comedy-be-ministry-part-2.html' title='Can Comedy Be A Ministry? Part 1

The Philosophical Difference Between Christian Comedy and Secular Comedy

Part One: Why Christian Comedy is viewed with distrust by the World.

Christian comedy is not some new invention or derivation of a secular form of entertainment. It is an artistic creation that endevours to bring out a Gospel truth using the medium of humor the same way that a Christian painter endevours to depict Christ or His handiwork on his canvas. So in it's truest form, Christian comedy is an art form. Placed in this perspective, it can be perceived a little more clearly for the sake of this philosophical discussion. This article has been divided into three examinations of the artist: the Secular, the Sacred, and the Profane.

The fundamental difference between sacred art and secular art goes much deeper than a simple matter of theme. This is because the difference lies in the core reason for doing it.

Secular art is most often "art for art's sake." The focus is not the object pictured or theme portrayed but rather the style in which it is depicted or portrayed. However, in sacred art, the focus is Christ, and the style is merely an expression of the individual artist.

The success of secular art is measured by the intellectual appreciation of the higher critic and popular acceptance. The success of Christian art is measured by the degree of increased awareness in the viewer of some aspect of God.

The secular artist is gratified when their artistic talent is recognised, their artwork purchased and their name glorified: the Christian artist is gratified when, through their talent, God is recognised, His Son accepted, and His name glorified.

This is the reason that Christian art, in all its various forms, is subject to immediate suspicion by the secular mind. When viewing art where Christ is the theme, it is recognised immediately that there is an ulterior motive behind it other than the artists's desire for pure personal expression (which is tantamount, in their thinking, in the creation of pure art). Whether a painting, Christian film, play, piece of music or song, drama or comedy performance, the art critic (professional or self-appointed) must always mentally subtract the message and attempt to judge the art for it's own sake. However, the art will always be judged as lacking since its theme and the artist is insulting to their intelligence and ego.

This illogical thinking would have been condemned if a recognised art critic had denigrated Andy Warhol's famous painting of the Campbell's soup can simply because he disliked that brand of soup. But secular criticism of Christian art is shared by most of their peers because they feel that the Christian artist has betrayed the artistic ideal by putting it in submission to or in a secondary position behind the subject.

Sadly, too, the secular man's rejection of Christ causes not only the art but the artist to be illogically hated and berated, whereas if the same artist had performed or created the same artistic piece without the Christian message they and their art would be hailed and praised. At the very least, where the artistic talent is less than fully developed, they would be defended for their expression and interpretation, which is the one sacred thing in the secular mind.

Even in the mind of the average man who has given little or no thought as to why the various expressions of Christian art are distasteful to him, is the subconscious awareness that everything done by the Christian artist is suspect because they are "trying to get somebody saved." This often unconscious distrust is a reaction of his fallen (and spiritually dead) inner man against the gospel message.

It all boils down to the statement made by Jesus: "The servant is not greater than his master; if they have hated Me, they will also hate you."

The Christian artist understands that everything he does must reflect the Person that is his master. Art, like work, play, relationships, our lives or anything else that we share in common with all of humanity, must shine forth the message of the Gospel and glorify God. This is the reason that comedy, like any other form of art or communication, may be used of God; it is the saving power of Christ, brought by the Word and the Spirit, within the art that is responsible for the life-changing results. So, to those that the Spirit is calling, your message is powerful and effective. To those rejecting this call, it can be distasteful.

Art is a tool, and a talent is a God-given ability to use certain tools, whatever they may be. When a tool is given more emphasis than the job it is created for, the natural order of things has been perverted. Thus, the fundamental philosophical difference between secular and sacred perception of the role of art.

Another perception worth mentioning concerning the role of art is the view of art by the profane artist. The secular artist creates to express self. The sacred artist creates to express faith in God. The profane artist creates to denigrate God, mock Christianity, and destroy faith. The profane artist perceives art as a tool as well, to express his own detestation of the belief in the God of the Scriptures, and in some extreme cases, to glorify God's enemy, Satan. This view mirrors that held by the Christian, except that the message is in stark opposition. Although the message is one of hatred and defilement of the sacred, the view of art is the same as the sacred artist: that art is a powerful tool for expressing the belief one holds. Ironically, although at opposite ends of the pole, both views more accurately grasp the true potential and power of art for affecting the minds and hearts of the viewer than that held by the secular artist.

Next: Part Two

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://letsskitbusy.blogspot.com/2010/01/can-comedy-be-ministry-part-1.html' title='Can Comedy Be A Ministry? I was looking at the stats counter on my main site, ChristianSkitScripts.com today and realised that the one millionth visitor had come and gone over 21,000 visitors ago!

Reaching the one millionth visitor mark is a high point for me, as the site's visitor count has been steadily increasing since it was first launched in September of 2002, or a period of 2,614 days.

The hit counter on the front page only counts those entering the site, not the pages viewed once there. When he thinks that an escaped convict is lurking outside, he forgets the Bible lesson on fear he was studying, and panics. A comedy of terrors results, as circumstances conspire to bring him to the brink of a nervous breakdown. After turning back to the scriptures for comfort, he discovers that our imagined fears and reality are often two very different things.

Using the recorded soundtrack CD for accompaniment, the actors had fun with their performance, unfettered by having to memorise lines.

Derek Crane digs into the snack foods he has stockpiled for his night alone.

Derek assures his wife that he is fine, as she calls to check up on him. And although it's too late to perform this skit by Halloween, you can enjoy reading it and listening to it right here.

Synopsis: A fellow, asked to direct a church play, declines due to a lack of faith in his ability. Later, while napping, an angel visits him in a vision and takes him to the Cemetary of Buried Talents. Christian Skit Scripts can supply some help in that area!

Tapping into the imagination is a great way to make lessons come to life in the mind of the student, and become imbedded in the memory. The albums by Prime Example, "Comedy Skits and Songs," and "Comedy Cookout," made available on the official site on the Comedy CDs page, are great not only for your listening enjoyment, but are terrific to use in classes for youth and young adults.

Another way to use our material is to get the students involved by having students do readings of certain scripts. The ones that are talented in reading out loud and performing will enjoy doing it, and the rest will enjoy listening. This exercise may also get them excited about actually performing the script for the class or church, which will stimulate your drama team growth.

After playing the skits from the album, or having the students read the scripts, you can invite a class discussion about what they just heard or read. That's where "S.P.L.A.T." comes into play!

What's S.P.L.A.T.?

Good question! Aside from the noise an egg makes when thrown against a hard surface, it's also short for:

SPiritual Life Application Teaching!

"Toss it out there and see what sticks!"

SPLAT is the name of a planned series of original outlines that help you to use the album tracks from the Prime Example CDs and scripts in your classroom. Each recorded skit or script will have a corresponding SPLAT page on this site, which supplies scripture references for the skit or song, questions to ask, discussion topics, etc. You will be able to print them out and put them in a notebook if you like, to use at your convenience.

SPLAT #1: "The Trials of Rev. Milton Blumquist"

This entry is #1 in the series and is intended for use with the first Prime Example album, "Comedy Skits and Songs," which can be ordered on the Soundtracks page. You may preview it by downloading the MP3 file. Or, you can read the script, which differs from the album in ways that make it easier to perform live.

Synopsis:

The good Reverend Blumquist has a weekly radio program on a local Christian station that he records at home. This week, his topic is "Patience." Unfortunately, Milton has some problems with patience in his own life, and each point that he brings out in the sermon comes back at him through irritations that threaten to stop the program: a psycho poodle, a noisy neighbor, a tremor-inducing train, etc. All of these are intended to help him learn his own lesson. But will he learn it before he completely loses it and ruins his testimony?

Questions for discussion:

These questions are intended to stimulate open discussion and thought. You may take the lessons further with your own insight and answers that you share after hearing the class input.

Q: Is the man in the skit a Christian? Explain your answer.

Q: Who do you think sent all the interruptions: God, to teach him, or the devil, to tempt him to sin?

Q: How do we see difficulties in our lives: as opportunities to learn and grow, or hinderances to trip
us up?

Q: Can a temptation by the devil be used of the Lord for our good?

Q: What was the result of his impatience? Who was affected by his outbursts?

Q: Are we ever in situations where our actions are different from our words?

Q: If we "lose it" like the character, how can we go about correcting the problem, or repairing the
damage?

Scripture references to look up and read:

These scriptures are either referred to in the skit or inferred by the message. After reading each scripture, discuss how it relates to the message of the skit, and how it relates to our own lives.

(All references are from the New King James Version.)

Luke 21:19 "By your patience possess your souls."

James 1:2-4 "My brethren, count it all joy when you fall into various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience. But let patience have its perfect work, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking nothing."

James 5:11 "Indeed we count them blessed who endure. You have heard of the perseverance of Job and seen the end intended by the Lord—that the Lord is very compassionate and merciful."

2nd Cor 6:4 "But in all things we commend ourselves as ministers of God: in much patience, in tribulations, in needs, in distresses"

2nd Timothy 2:24 24 And the Lord's servant must not quarrel; instead, he must be kind to everyone, able to teach, not resentful.

Romans 5:3-4 And not only that, but we also glory in tribulations, knowing that tribulation produces perseverance; and perseverance, character; and character, hope.

Romans 12:12 "...rejoicing in hope, patient in tribulation, continuing steadfastly in prayer;"

In coming weeks and months, this section will grow as the SPLAT pages are expanded and added. Come back soon and see what's new!

Listen to some samples of the new play soundtrack!

In my last post I told you about the new play I had written for this Christmas titled "Redemption In The Wings," which you can read and print out from the official site. But on Tuesday, October 13, I posted the script and the CD purchase link, and breathed a huge sigh of relief and exhaustion. There were nearly 20 pre-orders waiting for the CD, and they had to be mailed out immediately. Most of the people pre-ordering were those that had done my play "The Christmas Family" in the last year or two, and they were waiting for the new one. I hope everyone likes "Redemption In The Wings" as much as the former one.

This one is done in the same style, the unique "Play/Act!" format that I came up with. All of the dialog is related by the narrator, so the actors don't have to learn lines, only actions. They don't even lip-sync it, which I am not a fan of. They just act as if saying the approximate things, and the narrator tells the basics of what is being said. We've all seen montage or flashback scenes in movies, where the main character tells what happened in the past, and we see it, only hearing the sound in a reduced manner in the background. Well, that's how the entire play works here.

All that is happening is in the past, and the main character is also the narrator who is relating it according to memory.

Read the script here: "Redemption In The Wings."
Here's a ten-minute MP3 preview of one of the tracks: Listen here!

It just might solve your problem of getting actors involved, due to the stress of learning lines being absent!

The Best Skit Ideas Come While At The Flea Market!

Down in Savannah, Georgia, about an hour from where I live, there is a large place called "Keller's Flea Market." Me and my wife go there sometimes, and once we find a parking space (a daunting task in itself), we split up and go our separate ways, (temporarily) to meet back at the entrance at a specified time.

Home of the Big Cow

I usually haunt the old book, comic and record bins, but I also keep my eyes open for interesting junk that can be used as props in skits. Flea markets, or just plain old yard sales, are great places for this.

But I seldom, if ever, go out looking for a specific item needed for a pre-written skit. It works kind of opposite. I see interesting or odd items, and they generate skit ideas that utilize them! For example, I might find a hat with a large pair of lips on them. "That looks funny," I think. Then an idea for a skit where a character wears such a hat suggests itself. If it seems promising, I'll buy the hat, then go home and write down the skit idea that came to mind. When I have the time, I'll sit down later and think it through, developing it into a full-blown script.

Now, few of those type of ideas end up on this script site, since you may never find a prop or costume item just like that. I try to post scripts that use easy-to-find props. However, it demonstrates a technique that you can use to develop your own skit ideas. Seldom do skits come by sitting down and saying, "I shall now write a skit." They come by capturing the odd ideas that float through your head, mostly prompted by something you see or hear. An interesting prop, anecdote, sermon, song, etc., that gives you a kernal of an idea that you jot down and develop later.

That's how most of the ideas for the scripts on this site come about; by harnessing the ideas that flit through my mind all during the day, and saving them for future work. Don't depend on your memory, you'll forget it. Jot it down quickly and save it. I have a text file on my PC just for saving ideas. Regularly I'll open it up, go over the large collection of thought and ideas, and pick the one that is the most promising for what I need. Most of them do get developed over time. Others just float there, in limbo, waiting for the day when they too, might be picked for development.

So, watch for junk as you browse your local garage sales or flea market. You might be surprised at the treasures you will find that will spark an idea for a great skit! And you never need tell your audience where you came up with it. I appreciate that very much. However, something I have noticed over the past few years since the site has been up is the use of the word "but" in their comments. Here's how it's most used: "I love your skits! They are funny, but they have a good message."

I know most people don't mean anything by it, it's just the way they express themselves. But it seems to me to illustrate a common perception that many have about skits. It's this: that "funny" and "having a good message" are usually mutually exclusive. The use of the word "but" implies that they don't expect to find a skit that is both funny and spiritually effective. Or that they are excusing the use of humor by adding the qualifying statement that it is also spiritual. The use of the word "but" carries the implication that there is something doubtful, or wrong, with humor.

Let me use it differently to make it clearer. Let's say that, in a conversation, I indicate a particular person and say about him, "He's a Baptist. And he's a good man!" That's simple and straightforward. However, what if I were to say, "He's a Baptist. But he's a good man!" Now, that puts a whole new spin on it, doesn't it? Wouldn't a hearer, being a Baptist, take exception to it as a slight? Of course they would. Adding "but" has the effect of suggesting that the speaker feels that there is something wrong with being a Baptist, and they add a qualifier to say that, in spite of that, they are good.

So, saying "Your skits are funny, but have a good message" is almost a backhanded compliment. Like saying, "You're smart, for a white guy." Not very complimentary after all. It suggests, that in spite of being funny, it is redeemed by having a good message.

I don't see such a dichotomy. When I write a skit, I strive to make it funny and meaningful, not funny but meaningful. See the difference?

The difference is in your approach to skits overall. If you see them primarily as entertainment, then they can be funny but meaningful. Maybe so, maybe not, but possibly, depending on if you can reconcile the humor with some kind of message. However, if you see them as a tool to impart a spiritual truth, then when you write humorous scripts, they will always be both funny and meaningful. It won't be an option.

Now, to some, that may not make much difference. But if you are interested in skits for the power they can have to impart a scriptural truth, like a parable, then the way you write or perform them will be different. If enough people see that type of commitment to ministry in skits, perhaps they will begin to understand that laughs and spiritual life go together naturally, not only when forced.

So, go forth, and leave the "but" behind you!

Soundtrack CD Tips

This entry is aimed at the person that will be operating the sound when you use the Soundtrack CDs that are provided for the scripts at Christian Skit Scripts.

Using a soundtrack CD to accompany a skit is similar to running a song soundtrack for a singer, but there are some important differences.

Be On Time!

First, not only are there musical pieces designed to add some kind of emotional content to a particular scene, but there are individual sound effects as well. For this reason, rehearsal with the CD as the actors practice is mandatory. You can't simply hand the CD to the sound person when you go to do the skit like you might when singing a song to a soundtrack tape. The sound person must work with the performers to make it all flow smoothly.

The sound person must have a copy of the script, and must keep up with the dialog as it is delivered, so as not to miss any of his cues. The sound must be run proactively, not reactively. Sound engineer, you must anticipate, not react. Be ready with the next track cued up, follow the dialog, and play the track as it is called for. There should be no pauses while the actors wait for the sound to catch up to the action.

In some tracks there are music and effects mixed. It is important that the actors recognise the significance of the sounds in relation to what they are doing on stage, and work with the sound, where it dictates their timing. This is where practice, and familiarity with the soundtrack comes in.

Sound Levels

Never let the music dominate the scene, it must only complement it. Make sure your performers aren't drowned out by a too-loud musical cue. It is a background element, and as such, enhances the scene. Blasting it out without regard to proper levels will detract from the scene and distract the audience, as well as your actors. Likewise, tracks played at too low a volume will get lost in the action and become confusing. Have a person work with you when practicing by telling you from their vantage point near the stage when an element needs to be played louder or softer. Keep notes as to which tracks may need to be adjusted each time, by marking on the script at the place the track is called for.

Mixing Elements

Some soundtracks have tracks that are intended to be played at the same time. For example, a continuous background sound, such as traffic, that plays overall. The individual effects are played as the script calls for, over the already playing background sounds. To do this, you will need to record the continuous effects track to another source, such as a cassette tape. Play the background effects as the script dictates, at an appropriately lower level to provide ambience. Then play the individual tracks from the CD over them at a higher level as they are called for. Once again, practice is needed to pull it off smoothly.

I am always happy to answer any questions you may have, or to act as a consultant, when it comes to making your use of the CDs and scripts go more smoothly. We've probably all seen it done. You may have even done it. "The Big Freeze." A skit has just been finished, and, as the script indicated, "The actors all FREEZE." I get chills just thinking about it.

The "freeze" is another pet peeve of mine. Excuse me... "freeze?" Why freeze? Was the skit being done in a refrigerator? Did the director push a "pause" button? Who came up with this silliness and why is it done? It's because, without a soundtrack that supplies an unmistakable musical end, the audience had no other way to know the skit was over! Or, the skit was written by someone relying too much on tradition to come up with a way to have the characters exit logically. Hence: "the characters all freeze." Lame, lame, lame.

Please, thaw out your poor frozen performers and simply have them exit the stage in a logically-written manner or to a musical closing theme. The Ice Age is over, folks... and the "freeze" method of ending a skit needs to go the way of the woolly mammoth... rapid extinction.

My Philosophy of Sketch Art

My Philosophy of Sketch Art

In many people's minds, the word "skit" brings to mind something that is not worth much; a short, quickly thrown-together bit of comedy fluff. (Most of this perception comes from the off-handed attitude of those that they have seen do them.) One proof of this that I see often, is the fact that so many wait till the last minute to look for a skit script online for an upcoming event or holiday. Many people put it off til the last minute, thinking that they can throw something together real fast, so there's no need to search early to give time to rehearse. This is not the way to do it, folks.
For me, a long-time sketch writer and performer, a skit is much more than a last-minute afterthought. It is something that begins with a good idea, which is then thoughtfully developed and written with the mind of being an enduring piece of art that may be enjoyed for many years. After being written, the soundtracks are carefully produced (if it needs one), mixing just the right effects and musical backgrounds from my large collection of paid-use effects and production music libraries.

And once posted on my site, "Let's Skit Crazy!" that skit script, when selected to be performed, is brought to life through the years by countless others who invest of their own time, talent, imagination and hard work to bring it's message to their audience. The success of the performance is directly related to the amount of each of those ingredients invested.

Although there are some skits posted here that are intentionally easy to do within a short preparatory time frame, that is not the overall consideration. Rather, I resist the "last-minute, quick-and-dirty" mindset of skit performance as a philosophy. The Lord Jesus gave equal consideration to the smallest details in the design of His universe as He did the infinitely large aspects. A truth known by many is that the hand of God is seen most in the details of His design. The submolecular physicist, exploring the tiniest bits of matter that his instruments will allow, is just as awed by the density and design, as the scientist peering through the most powerful space telescopes at the countless myriads of galaxies presently visible in the universe.

So, we should be as careful doing the small things in His kingdom, as the big things. For skits, though short, can be very powerful in their impact and effectiveness of bringing God and His plan into focus for the people in the audience. Therefore, we should make their presentation as professional and impressive as possible, to let the message shine through clearly, and not be obscured by sloppiness or carelessness.

The skits posted at "Let's Skit Crazy!" are intended to supply you, the director or performer, with some fun, inventive and message-meaty material to work with. (Did I succeed? That's left for you to decide.) With the script in hand, and the soundtrack to enhance your performance, you have the tools to make your skit efforts shine in a way that few have seen them done. You may find that they are so well received, that you will want to keep doing them for others, in other churches. This is a side-effect experienced by many that have used them!

So, although you may be initially forced to do some quickly, now that you have found the site I encourage you to come back often. Print out the scripts you wish to use, order the soundtrack if it has one available, and expose your team to your excitement at doing them in the best manner you can. It will catch on, and your team will become in demand in areas beyond your own church. In fact, I used to travel extensively as part of Prime Example, but due to the demand for quality scripts, decided to scale back that aspect and devote the time I had to making them available to others, such as yourself, to use. Their impact is now being felt far beyond the limited areas I could travel to.

I hope that my Sketch Art philosophy has inspired you to reconsider your approach to it, if you had -however unconsciously- viewed them as disposable elements of the church service. You are working toward an eternal goal and reward... don't you think your efforts should be the best they can be?

Welcome to my new blog!

Welcome to my blog, dedicated to helping church drama directors and teams.
